How much will the Duty/GST cost? And are there any exemptions?

GST is 15% of the CIF value (cost+insurance+freight).

To be exempt from paying the GST, you need to meet the following conditions:

  • Be a first time immigrant or a returning New Zealand citizen
  • If a returning citizen, you must have been living outside of New Zealand for longer than 21 months.
  • Be prepared to sign a deed stating you will not sell the vehicle for at least 2 years
  • You must have owned the vehicle for a the last 12 months and be able to provide a purchase receipt.

Does my car need to be clean?

Yes, the car must be thoroughly cleaned before shipping. If the car is deemed to be unclean, the vehicle will need to be cleaned to the correct standard before getting a final release. This will be at the cost of the importer.

Can I pack personal effects in the vehicle?

Personal effects may not be loaded in any vehicle. The shipping line may refuse accept the vehicle on board.

Does my vehicle need to be warranted for export from New Zealand?

Vehicles must have a current warrant of fitness when departing New Zealand on a RORO (roll on, roll off) vessel.

What is the best method of shipping?

RORO or roll on roll off, is the best option for a number of reasons. Firstly the cost. RORO is the cheapest type of service, and you have the added benefit of shipping your precious cargo on vessels designed specifically for carrying cars, boats and any self propelled or towable cargo. All major car manufacturers use RORO vessels. Handling. The less handling the better. With RORO the car is driven on board the vessel, secured and then driven off at the destination. Don't be fooled!! It is commonly believed that RORO means the car is secured to the deck of the vessel. This isn't true. The vehicles are tucked away in the hull of the vessel, completely protected from the elements and salty ocean air.

Check List

  1. Check the vehicle meets the approved safety and emissions standards. Please visit www.nzta.govt.nz to find out information on road compliance and any import restrictions on any particular vehicle.
  2. If purchasing the vehicle we will require the Bill of sale from the seller. If you already own the vehicle then a copy of the original purchase bill of sale will be required.
  3. We will need a copy of the registration papers showing ownership. Depending on the country of purchase, and in some cases the state, the original ownership papers are needed before exporting. Do Not have these sent to you, or altered until our agent instructs the seller.
  4. Remove all personal items from your car.
  5. Aim to have the car as clean as possible, A good idea is to have the car steam cleaned and vacuumed prior to shipping.
  6. Marine Insurance. Please feel free to ask us for a quote.
  7. De-registration. On export some countries will need the car to be de-registered.
